A series of electrodes are used, like pieces of a puzzle, to create the cavity features for our mold projects. Electrodes are extracted and programmed from 3D part model files. A series of roughing operations removes the majority of the stock in preparation for the fine machining. The cutting programs are loaded from the network into the milling machine In a G-code format. After a series of 2D roughing cuts, the 3D cutting begins with Ball end mills. Larger ball mills rough the contoured shapes followed by the smaller ball mills to finish the surface details. The multi-featured electrode machining step is followed by a rigorous inspection step to verify the electrode size prior to the EDM machining operation.
